On November 29, 2019, the Annual Seminar of the Teaching and Research Society of the Outline of Chinese Modern History for Universities in Sichuan Province and the Academic Symposium on the Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China kicks off in Sichuan University of Arts and Science. Teachers of the Teaching and Research Section of Chinese Modern History and postgraduates of the School of Marxism attended the event. Nearly 180 students and teachers from the Schools of Marxism of Sichuan University, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Southwest Jiaotong University, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Chongqing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Guizhou Normal University and other universities inside and outside Sichuan participated in the seminar. Professor Wang Yue of Nanjing Normal University was invited to the event as a special guest. The School of Marxism of Sichuan University of Arts and Science has prepared for this event with meticulous care. On the morning of the 29th, Professor Hou Zhongming, Deputy Secretary of the CCP Committee of the School of Marxism of Sichuan University of Arts and Science, delivered a welcome speech on opening ceremony. Professor He Yun’an, President of the Teaching and Research Society of the Outline of Chinese Modern History for Universities in Sichuan Province and former deputy secretary of the CCP Committee of Southwest Jiaotong University, delivered a speech. In his speech, Professor He expressed his gratitude to the organizer, the School of Marxism of Sichuan University of Arts and Science, and for the support of the universities to the Annual Seminar of the Teaching and Research Society of the Outline of Chinese Modern History for Universities in Sichuan Province. After the opening ceremony, Professor Wang Yue, former dean of the School of Marxism at Nanjing Normal University and doctoral advisor, presented his report entitled “Innovative Teaching of Ideological and Political Courses”. The professor shared his insight into the reasons for innovative teaching of ideological and political courses, the basic concept of innovative classroom teaching of ideological and political courses and the path of innovative teaching of ideological and political courses. He pointed out that the content and the form of traditional classroom teaching can hardly meet the needs of the students, and an overall reform of ideological and political courses is imperative to truly understand and motivate students, and truly bring the enthusiasm and initiative of teachers into play. In this regard, he stressed the need to reinforce ideological and political courses by “putting content first”, “strengthening collective course planning”, “introducing a variety of teaching methods and means”, echoed by the teachers and students present.
On the afternoon of November 29, four excellent teachers from Southwest Jiaotong University, Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Chengdu Sport University and Mianyang Normal University put on a teaching demonstration. The teaching demonstration of Why China Takes the Socialist Path—Taking the Chengdu-Chongqing Railway as an Example”, presented by Associate Professor Wang Peng of the School, was highly praised by the experts, teachers and students present. Representatives from Southwest Jiaotong University, Sichuan University of Arts and Science and Leshan Normal University then share their insight in related issues. Diao Chenglin, a teacher of the School, presented an on-site practical teaching activity themed Activating the Small Classroom of Ideological and Political Courses with the Society—the Exhibition of Achievements in Railway Investigation and Design of the PRC, and showcases to the universities inside and outside Sichuan how the Teaching and Research Section of Chinese Modern History of the School leverages SWJTU’s strengths in the railway industry. Diao used the history of a dozen of unique railways as an example, such as Chengdu-Chongqing Railway, Chengdu-Kunming Railway, Qinghai-Tibet Railway and TAZARA Railway, and elaborated the systemic factors that contributed to the remarkable achievements of railway construction in the PRC with huge informative historical data and profound interpretations. Her demonstration is an excellent example of the efforts to promote the reform and innovation of ideological and political theory courses, and enhance the ideological and theoretical quality, affinity and pertinence of ideological and political courses, which was highly appreciated by the teachers and students present and received their unanimous praise.
At 17:00 on November 29th, the seminar ends on a successful note, and is believed to have promoted the communication between the teaching teams of the Outline of Chinese Modern History in universities inside and outside Sichuan, and also showcase the charisma of the teaching team of the School.
