The micro film Flip selected by our School for competition won the Grand Prize and the Best Innovation Award in the 4th Ideological and Political Course in My Heart National University Student Micro Film Exhibition by the Ministry of Education. Flip stood out from the works of over a thousand colleges and universities across the country. It was instructed by the School of Marxism’s professors including Lin Bohai, Li Xueyong, Jing Xingwei, and Yang Huan, and participated by the School’s students such as Ma Xiaoying, Chu Yixiong, and Wu Hao. The film received strong support from all parties of our School. As an outstanding graduate of Southwest Jiaotong University and a senior ideological and political professor, Professor He Yunan instructed this film and was a guest appearance, adding more value to this film. It demonstrated the achievements of our School’s ideological and political work, and the discipline construction of Marxist theory.
Flip selected the section of Flying Youth Dreams in the Practice of Realizing the Chinese Dream in the Ideological and Moral Cultivation and Legal Foundation course as the theme. The content involved self-exploring, self-realizing, and finally returning to their ideals and original intentions of two generations respectively at the beginning of the reform and opening up in the 1980s and the new era. The film told the story of two students from the Southwest Jiaotong University returning to the old campus at the foot of Mount Emei in order to complete the learning task of the Ideological and Political Course Flipped Class. Through the guidance of an old photo album, they learned about the youthful years in the 1970s and 1980s of an old senior named Wu Haoran. Wu Haoran went to the United States to study in the 1980s. Although faced with favorable overseas conditions, he still returned to China to devote himself to the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, dedicating his precious youth to our country. The two students were touched by this story and brought the story back to the Ideological and Political Course Flipped Class. At the end of the film, the elderly Wu Haoran was invited to back to the campus, communicate with the students in class, and answer the questions raised by the students. At last, the students understood that personal growth and national development were shared by mutual honor, their personal ideals also have been sublimated.
The film took the changes of the heroine Zhou Xuan’s mindset and the hero Wu Haoran’s experience in the 1980s as the two main lines. Through the narrative technique of intertwining memories and reality, it demonstrated the subtle and irreplaceable role of ideological and political education in shaping the values of college students. The process of combining elements such as home and country, individual and society, struggle and dedication interpreted the idea that though time passed, original intentions remained unchanged.
After in-depth learning and implementation of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech and spirit of instructions on the Studying of the Histories of the Party, New China, the Reform and Opening-up, and Socialist Development, the film-making team members combined School characteristics and historical development with Plans During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), China’s Transportation Strength Construction, and construction of major transportation projects such as the Sichuan-Tibet Railway to complete this film on the eve of the centenary of the CPC. The film Flip selected the section of Flying Youth Dreams in the Practice of Realizing the Chinese Dream in the Ideological and Moral Cultivation and Legal Foundation course as the theme.
Adhering to the principle of starting from reality, the film-making team members decided to adopt the behavior of Southwest Jiaotong University students actively learning the histories of the Party, new China, the reform and opening-up, and socialist development into a story of two contemporary college students’ self-exploration and self-realization based on reality. The intriguing film compared the different choices of college students in two eras with different historical development and combined the Ideological and Political Course Flipped Class with history. In the protagonist’s own constant ideological struggle, the older generations’ hard work spirits at Southwest Jiaotong University, the important role of the Ideological and Political Course Flipped Class, and the theme of the unification of personal ideals and social ideals were demonstrated.
The award winning of the film Flip not only reflects the profound ideological and political education materials in the history of our University, but also shows the feelings and inheritance of the new and old generations of Southwest Jiaotong University to build China with transportation strength. Moreover, it demonstrates the two major work, namely the integration of our University’s ideological and political work and double first-class discipline construction.
