In order to warmly celebrate the successful convening of the 20th CPC National Congress, implement the spirit of the 15th Party Congress of the University, and inherit and carry forward the scientist spirit, on the afternoon of October 27, SWJTU held the Scientist Spirit Theme Exhibition on ‘Spiritual Guidence·Make China Great’, relying on the ‘Country with Strong Transportation Network’ Scientist Spirit Education Base. Wang Shunhong, Secretary of the University CPC Committee, Zhai Wanming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chief Professor of the University, as well as leaders of the relevant administrative departments of the University, representatives of teachers and students from the School of Marxism, the High School Affiliated to Southwest Jiaotong University, and Children's Primary School of Southwest Jiaotong University attended the opening ceremony. Gui Fuqiang, Deputy Secretary of the University CPC Committee presided over the opening ceremony.
In his speech at the opening ceremony, Wang Shunhong said that in the long 126-year history of the University, scientists represented by Mao Yisheng, Zhu Kezhen, Lin Tongyan, and Huang Wanli have emerged. The scientist spirit with the core of “patriotism, innovation, truth-seeking, dedication, collaboration, and talent cultivation” is not only a true reflection of their glorious quality, but also a valuable asset to stimulate the struggle of SWJTU people. The construction of the ‘Country with Strong Transportation Network’ Scientist Spirit Education Base and the holding of the Scientist Spirit Theme Exhibition on ‘Spiritual Guidance· Make China Great’ aim to learn and inherit their noble character and great spirit, so as to inspire the striving force of the people of Southwest Jiaotong University to carry forward the past and open up the future, unite and work hard.
He stressed that the 20th CPC National Congress took education, science and technology, and talents as the basic and strategic support for comprehensively building a modern socialist country. The University must shoulder the significant mission of educating people for the Party and the nation, and the important responsibility of developing the country through science and education as well as strengthening the country through transportation. Besides, the University must actively inherit and carry forward the scientist spirit, inspiring a more excellent learning style in a new era, irradiate a more vigorous innovation vitality, and cultivate more innovative talents, making the due contribution of SWJTU to the construction of a modern socialist country.
He requested that the School of Marxism and the relevant functional departments of the University should rely on the Base to explore the educational resources of the university’s scientist spirit, give full play to the role of the Base in educating people, tell stories of the university’s scientists, inherit and carry forward the scientist spirit and fine tradition of SWJTU, and serve the fundamental task of fostering virtues and cultivating people. He hoped that students would study hard and have a deep understanding of the scientist spirit’s core of “patriotism, innovation, truth-seeking, dedication, collaboration, and talent cultivation”, and strive to contribute their own strength to build Southwest Jiaotong University into a world’s leading university in the field of rail transit.
Academician Zhai Wanming said that scientific achievements cannot be achieved without spiritual support. As a scientific and technical worker, he expressed his own experience on the practice and promotion of scientist spirit. He believed that carrying forward and practicing scientist spirit require us to have the patriotism of bearing the motherland in mind and serving the people, the innovation spirit and academic responsibility, the collaborative spirit of gathering wisdom to work together, and perseverance focusing on the overall development of the country and the nation. He called on Southwest Jiaotong University students to inherit, carry forward, and practice scientist spirit, and strive to become young scientists and young talents with excellent qualities of patriotism, innovation, truth-seeking, and dedication, contributing to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
Tian Yongxiu, Executive Dean of the School of Marxism, first expressed her gratitude on behalf of the faculty and students of the School of Marxism for the support and cooperation of the University CPC Committee and all departments in organizing this theme exhibition. She pointed out that the scientist spirit theme exhibition was one of the series of activities of the University to study the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress, was a practical action to implement the important discourses of the Party Central Committee on moral education and technological innovation with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, and was a concrete measure to implement the spirit of the 15th Party Congress of the University. She said that this theme exhibition ran through the concept of student-centered and teacher-student joint research, with the purpose of strengthening students’ value orientation, cultivating students’ innovative consciousness and ability, supporting ideological and political education system and construction of school disciplines, and supporting the integrated development of ideological and political work of the University, putting scientist spirit education into practice, practicing the instructions of the CPC Central Committee on ideological and political education, and striving to cultivate an innovative culture in SWJTU to educate people for the Party and the country.
Xian Huaduoduo, a 2021 undergraduate student from the School of Marxism, spoke about her learning experience. As a student majoring in ideological and political science, she is well aware that ideological and political classes are the main channel to promote the scientist spirit. In the process of participating in the shooting of University’s ideological and political micro film Bridge, she deeply understood the connotation of the scientist spirit. She called on students to learn and inherit scientist spirit, contributing youthful strength to the comprehensive construction of a modern socialist country in all aspects and the comprehensive promotion of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
After the opening ceremony, under the guidance of student docents from the School of Marxism, teachers and students on site visited the exhibition in a serious and orderly manner.
The exhibition mainly displayed advanced deeds and touching stories of more than 60 scientists cultivated by our university, and was divided into three parts: ‘Spiritual Monument, Standing Immortal’, ‘Taking over and Carrying Forward, Striving for Excellence’, and ‘Solidifying Roots and Casting Soul, Enlightening the Heart’. On the basis of the completion of the main ‘indoor’ exhibition, the Base will continue to create multi-dimensional, multi-section, and multi-field exhibition design, such as ‘outdoor + indoor’, ‘online + offline’, ‘campus + off-campus’, and continue to play the ‘SWJTU’ effect.
